Ajwain has “Hyoscine” which is an Anticholinergic class of drug that blocks the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous system. Anticholinergic drugs competitively inhibit binding of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. They target either muscarinic acetylcholine receptors or, less commonly, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Ø Muscarinic receptors are found on nerve endings to smooth muscles cells, its anticholinergic action exerts a smooth-muscle relaxing/spasmolytic effect relieve cramping & abdomenalgia, secretory glands and the eye. They are also found in the central nervous system. Ø Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are located at the nerve endings of neuromuscular junctions and are the target of muscle relaxing drugs. Extracts of Ajwain increased significantly the urine volume and also increased the excretion of electrolytes Na+, K⁺, Clˉ which stimulates diuresis, as deobsturent provides relief from pain due to spasm. |
